Analyst Silliness

Unsurprisingly several months of a massive PR assault from Microsoft is followed by a spike in sales. Halo 3 racked up 3.3 million units since launch, which is not bad, but then again also not that out of the ordinary for a blockbuster title. Nonetheless, the hand that feeds will not be bitten, and analysts use magical math to make it seem as if Xbox 360 is some revolutionary occurrence in the history of the video game industry. Why I’m always right.

So, without bragging, I feel I've made some accurate predictions about the gaming industry. Here I will elaborate a little on one of them, because I checked the numbers today and I feel pretty accomplished. — read on

New industry, old ideas.

[Whoa, what a giant interlude.] Today I ran across an announcement that Harvey Birdman will soon "hatch" on various console platforms. Nothing new here, at first sight. While my own writing and research is moving towards mods, collaborative game design, and multi-producer games, I'm starting to notice that this hooks in nicely with some recent talks and articles. I found this excellent review of Joichi's talk at 23C3 in Berlin. — read on

SOE White paper

Station Exchange, SOE's auction site for Sony's MMOs, published a white paper on the activities of its first year. By now the press release has been plastered all over the www, but I suggest you read it yourself. Props to Gamasutra for being the only one actually hosting the document. Highlights after the jump. — read on

Sony’s portable, online trading card games.

Today I briefly talked to Gary Podorowsky, VP in Strategic Marketing & Planning at Sony USA. He gave out some basic numbers on Sony's recent Q3 reporting: $17 billion of its total $64 billion in worldwide revenue comes from the U.S.; $41 billion comes from electronics, and so far they've sold (cumulatively) over 200 million PlayStation units. — read on
