Lekker self-promotion

Today I got word that Computer Games as a Sociocultural Phenomenon is available. Woo hoo. You’ll find me right in the front of the book, in between the Introduction and Ian Bogost. Not a bad place to be.

My 6,000 word contribution boils down to the following: just as any other (visual) media, videogames have a particular underlying syntax. I explore three preliminary elements to this videogame ‘vocabulary’: separation, spectacle, and speed. The main motivation behind it is my discontent with the fact that despite all the narratological, ludological, computational, and comp-lit interpretations of videogames, few have addressed the “video”-part of, well, videogames.

So, go read it and get back to me. [If you don’t want to pay the 45GBP then you can also download my chapter, conveniently located under “read a sample chapter” [.pdf].

1. Tasty, something that tastes or looks good;

2. Pleasant.
