What’s missing here?

It strikes me as odd that when someone announces a new game, the press release spews a ton of circumstantial information at you but not a word about game play. Spiderman 3, predictably, will be filled to brim with original actors who should still be “in character” and the PS3 and XBOX360 capacity blablabla…

Let me guess. You’ll be web-slinging around Manhattan chasing bad guys? One can only hope that it wasn’t as bad as the first installment, but seriously, where’s the innovation here? After all the “exposure” and “working closely with Sony Pictures” must you really just reproduce the same thing, only in a game? Why not shoot Spidey to some other country, or to another planet?

I realize that the idea behind licensing IP to games means that people sort of know what they’re getting themselves into. But would it be too much to ask to break the Spiderman bubble? Without the spandex, this will no doubt be just a glossed-up version of Paperboy. Show me a green spiderman, dangit. Rock my world. Next: Police Academy IVX – Maloney’s Revenge.
